The main question on the minds of parents, teaching staff and all those working with children with learning disabilities or specifically ADD, is how to motivate them to learn.

Traditional approaches such as rewards, competition and authority, force children with learning difficulties into a deadlock. They bring about an outer motivation that is limited in time and encourages only those with an inner motivation. Children who learn because they are rewarded for doing so tend to stop when they stop being rewarded and competition encourages only those who have a chance at winning. The others don’t even try and don’t forget that in a competition there is only one winner and many losers, whose motivation will decline as soon as the competition ends…

Children, who learn only because they are threatened, develop negative feelings such as anger, and these feelings prevent creative thinking. These children will stop making an effort when they are no longer frightened by the threats.
